the work of ALISON DUNLOP

wandering thoughts and images from the studio

winter's firm grip

the sun trying in vain to burn through that high, icy canopy above.

the hand that draws you in...

This wonderful drawing by Leonardo was one of the first images to inspire me when I was young.... the intimate marks on the paper tracing the interplay between mind, eye and hand, transforming a 2 dimensional surface into the illusion of something sculptural and pulsing with life!

Whenever I'm struggling and find that my focus has slipped or my creative juices aren't flowing for some reason, I turn back to my first love: drawing. This most direct and intimate way of making marks on a surface, of recording ideas and impressions always seems to cut through any blocks I might have and helps me to find a way back on my journey!

my studio waits "patient"-ly

Nearly 3 weeks ago, I left my studio to head south to deliver some work to a gallery and then to face one of my biggest fears... a stay in hospital for surgery.
After a final glance around to see if I'd forgotten anything, I walked towards the studio door, keys in hand, and sensed that big, blank, fresh canvas I'd put on my easel, ready for my return, glaring at me...
Even my brushes, which lay where I'd left them the night before, seemed not just to be resting, but reproaching me. I tried to push those silly thoughts aside, but deep down, I feared how long it might be until I walked back into that treasured space.
Recovery time (yes, I survived!) has turned out to be much slower and more arduous than I'd expected (I've never been a patient patient!) but I'm learning that  this is one thing I can't force - despite a willing and stubborn spirit! Yesterday, I was inspired by reading the blog of American artist Deborah T. Colter (<http://deborahcolter.com/in-the-studio/>), in which she wrote of her "brushes resting" just now too, because her muse had momentarily left her. She went on to say that she thinks that "learning not to fight the natural ebb and flow is important".
Yes, there is a necessary "ebb and flow" about creativity, which needs to be respected - there's no point in fighting it, or feeling guilty when that energy is absent. It's only too easy to forget this...
Her gentle acknowledgement and acceptance of this has helped and inspired me to accept my enforced inactivity as a necessary restoring and replenishing of the body and the spirit. A time for reflection, for taking stock, re-charging of batteries. A new year beckons...

(this one thing I do accept - there'll be no more hefting of heavy beams and boulders for this girl!)

Early morning light, the kettle boiling, I looked out through the window and caught the piercing eye of this noble savage. Before long, companions joined him and locked horns, practicing their rutting manoevres! What a privilege, to have such a close encounter with these beasts!

food for the fire

Very pleased with my wood-pile... such satisfying work!! My stack in its temporary position, sheltered against the dune-bank before the wood-store gets built next week - fingers crossed. The studio has an incredibly hungry stove...
